Google is no longer the only word of the day... My dear Google, I thank you for having been always there to provide me with all the answers I was looking for, all the why's and how's, all the solutions and readings. I will not be so very loyal to you these days! Eureka!Other search engines do exist and I hope I will be able to make full use of these.
I always thought that Google was like Atlas, who in Greek Mythology was condemned to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. Well, Google still does it but I realize that the burden is shared now among so many other search engines such as Wikipedia, Newseum and all the other search engines listed on Noodle Tools.
In only one week I learned that the world is available to us at only some few clicks and it is up to us to manage all that we get and make full use of all these. When I was a University student, I went through loads and loads of documents at the archives of Mauritius and at the University to be able to write my thesis. It was a time consuming activity. I do not look down upon the good old ways of conducting research. I still love the feel of opening a book, going through the pages, searching for the correct information, reading and taking down the relevant notes. But I really impressed at the millions of documents, books, journals and so many other writings made available nowadays just by properly searching on the web. Barriers to learning, to knowledge have crumbled down so let us all benefit from these so that we can as teachers inculcate a new type of culture in our learners. We have the power to do it, so let's do it.

Hello Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteIts amazing to find out millions of documents on the noodlestool.com. We must thank our course . As you said I had the same feelings to be loaded with books and notes that our lecturers delivered in the classrooms. Now is the era of technology but unfortunately, developing countries like Nepal have no sufficient access to internet and not taking much benefit from these type of materials but we will be using in near future.Its my hope.
Thanks for sharing experiences.

Hello Jennifer.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your idea of our responsibility for having our students equipped with internet searching skills. However, honestly, I myself do not have these skills properly, I think, and I'm still dubious about using information on the web. Lots of books and thesis are proofread by numerous professors and experts, so I think these can be credible. But what about information on the web? I do not guarantee whether we can trust this or not. Maybe in the near future, I hope we can handle this problems.
Thanks for your ideas.^^;

Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteLike you said, we have the power to do it. So let's do it. :))
Looks like everybody I have met is a fan of google. But now that we have acquired some knowledge to widen our horizon, I think we all can use other search engines rather than google. Since it is a new type of culture, we need to adapt and adopt it so as to suit our needs.
Nowadays, even note taking is easier since we can just copy and paste any information we need. But we need to learn to maintain our creativity or else we will always be the second hand version of somebody else. Right?
Your post has given much food for thought.
Best,

Hello Jennifer!
ReplyDeleteI loved the way you addressed to "Mr. Google" hahaha... He was the perfect mate, but not loyal to him anymore. It is wonderful to see how many new educational search engines we have and the HUGE amount of resources found in the web (just like you quoted).
Regarding your comment about the "ol' good days" of opening a book, I feel melancholy when kids don't do that anymore, I feel like that was the real research soul, but it is also great to see how fast and efficiently we have information nowadays through the web.
Thank you for sharing! Greetings from Honduras in Central America :)
